The CoroCAM 4+ is designed for electrical corona location, quantification, output for video recording or computer frame grabbing and producing a report with the CoroSoft software. The location of electrical corona is typically over the defect which causes the electrical field to be "pinched" resulting in the breakdown of the nitrogen in the air. The breakdown of the nitrogen causes ultraviolet light emission, sound emission, nitric acid (when moisture is present), and ozone. The intensity of corona is variable with the Relative Air Density (RAD) which has components of atmospheric pressure, air or component temperature, other factors include wind velocity, and humidity when it reaches condensing fog or light rain.
When scanning for electrical corona it is common to use maximum UV gain until a corona source is found when the gain is manually decreased to view the source. The image at this time can also be defined whether corona or arcing. Corona is random spots about a point and spread out. Arcing is defined, sustained and in a specific area. The ultraviolet signal produced by corona is much weaker then the signal of arcing. The ultraviolet signal itself decreases in a squared function with distance from the source.
